Diet Regimen for Flower

Posted by: Kalis on Wednesday, March 8, 2017

After several months of working with Flower we have him down about 6 lbs.  He dropped weight rather quickly at first just from calorie control and then he has slowly lost more weight through a mix of diet and exercise.  Since I have been asked by several skunk owners, here is my diet regimen for him.

Flower in Bloom

Posted by: Kalis on Thursday, December 29, 2016

So it has been 20 days since I first picked up Flower and he surprised me with his size. At 24 lbs I was not sure I would be able to manage getting him back to a healthier weight, especially when it became obvious that his size was impeding his ability to walk

Welcoming Flower

Posted by: Kalis on Sunday, December 11, 2016

As a Skunk Haven Rep I am committed to taking in Skunks in need of a home. Once taken in we work with those skunks to either re-home them to people looking to own a skunk or in some rare cases, we keep them. This Saturday I went and picked up Flower from his owner.  Flower's entire situation really spoke to my heart.   One half of a married couple passed away, and while the skunk's owner tried to do his best dealing with grief and with the care of Flower, Flower had always been more of the partner's pet. It eventually became clear to him that he was not providing Flower with the attention and time that he needed due to long work hours.  To top it off, with the loss of his primary caregiver, Flower was depressed.

The dreaded time of year

Newtie got spayed.   It was that time of year that I always dread for my female skunks because somehow I always get the crazy skunks that won't leave their bellies alone.  The vet set her up with this awesome diaper bandage that covers everything but her bum so she can't chew but she can still use the restroom.  As soon as I got home I added a cone using the same technique as my previous blog "That Cone Of Shame".   Then hell week began.

This is the tale of how I ended up with a new tootie.

Someone in one of the other skunk groups bought skunks and decided she didn't want them anymore. I went down to pick up one of the skunks because I live nearby and was informed that she would not be able to keep the skunk much longer.

Diagnosis at last

After much testing, we have finally figured out the cause of Gingerbread's prolapsing issues. Because she was obtained as a rescue it often leaves questions about how she was treated before we adopted her. One thing I know for sure because I ... Read the Rest

Skunk Diet Adjustments for Treating Prolapse

After having another skunk prolapse the night after Valentine's day I took my skunk to another vet to have a more in depth checkup. The vet decided to stop worming her with the Pyrantel Pamoate and changed her to Ivermectin  (Note that this was not him saying that Pyrantel Pamoate is a bad wormer for skunks, it was simply because her specific parasites did not seem to be clearing so he wanted to try a different option.)  Along with this, he gave Gingerbread a thorough checkup.

Butt Mom!

Gingerbread had a prolapse tonight. About a finger and a half to two fingers long, and she was so upset about it that every time someone tried to help her she would purse her butt and push it further out. Cue my boyfriend freaking out while I get in the car with a skunk and some lube to drive an hour to the emergency vet.

Urine Trouble

Recently Stunky started piddling small puddles all over the house.  We called the vet afraid that it might be a urinary tract infection or some sort of similar issue.  The Vet gave us an appointment time and said "Please bring a urine sample with you."

Now, I don't know about your pets, but my skunk is not intelligent enough to understand "please go pee in this cup for the vet."

Anyone who has small cats or dogs and spends a ton of money on Advantage II cause Florida (or anywhere else it seems) is full of fleas, per my vet, you just need these two items to save yourself a TON of money.
